Summertime, Insomnia Time

With the weather heating up, it can be a challenge to get comfortable at night and fall asleep. Patients with insomnia are more and more common with the arrival of summer, whether having trouble falling asleep, waking up at 3am, or not feeling at all rested.

In Traditional East Asian Medicine, heat—both in the literal sense, and in the medical sense of inflammation in its myriad forms—is a prime driver of difficulty sleeping, in its myriad forms in turn.

Whether that's the main reason they come in or not, I enjoy practicing acupuncture or prescribing classical herbal formulas that end up helping with their sleep--no matter the issue, I approach patients holistically, and help with everything I can.

Some symptoms I often help with include:

  • feeling like your mind is racing while you lie in bed, waiting to fall asleep

  • waking up at 2am every night and finding yourself staring at the ceiling

  • being unable to find a deep, quality sleep, and being woken up by the slightest noise

  • feeling exhausted upon waking, even if you got plenty of sleep
