Pickleball: Great Fun, Maybe Some Injuries, Too

pickleball paddle with ball and net on a pickleball court

Up until I had a patient with a pickleball injury, I'd never heard of the sport--now it seems like I'm seeing it everywhere! It does look pretty fun, but I can also see how it can be easy to develop rotator cuff and neck injuries with the quick movements necessary to keep up with the ball.

As I found with that patient, though, tuina bodywork and acupuncture provide exactly what's needed to help those injuries heal faster by restoring healthy circulation and reducing inflammation to help reduce symptoms of pain and discomfort. Patients really seem to have so much fun playing pickleball, and I greatly enjoy it when I'm able to help relieve their symptoms of pain and get to hear how happy they are to be back on the court. Some of the conditions and symptoms I regularly treat that might come up with pickleball injuries are:

  • pain and range of motion impairment from rotator cuff injuries

  • pain from shoulder joint impingement

  • pain from tennis elbow-type tendonitis and elbow nerve impingement

  • neck pain (both muscular and cervical spine sources)

  • speeding recovery from ligament tears and bursitis in the knees

  • back pain, both chronic and acute
